Gears of War 4 Review

(c) Microsoft Studios

The Coalition has unveiled their first explosive offering to the world: Gears of War 4.

Gears of War 4 takes place 25 years after the events of Gears of War 3, kick-starting an all-new saga. However, the game represents much, much more than that.

Microsoft purchased the Gears of War IP from Epic Games back in 2014, as the Unreal Engine developer began winding down its AAA game development ambitions. Microsoft repurposed the Vancouver-based Black Tusk Studios to oversee the franchise. Many developers from the original Gears of War team, including executive producer Rod Fergusson, jumped ship to join the new studio.

Black Tusk was renamed The Coalition to honor its stewardship of the Gears of War franchise. Much like Halo's 343 Industries and Forza's Turn 10, The Coalition is the third pillar in Microsoft's blockbuster Xbox-exclusive effort. The news was hugely exciting, but questions remained.

Can the Gears formula still work in 2016? Can The Coalition bring the same magic to the franchise under Microsoft Studios? Can Gears of War compete with the likes of Battlefield 1, Call of Duty, Titanfall 2, and various other heavy-hitting AAA shooters this holiday season? The answer to all of these questions is a resounding yes.

Story & Setting

Gears of War 4 follows the exploits of JD Fenix, the son of the original trilogy's main protagonist — Marcus Fenix. Throughout the campaign, JD is joined by his childhood friend, Delmont Walker.

Both JD and Delmont (Del for short) deserted the COG during a "classified" incident, leading them to join a band of Outsiders, who exist outside of the COG's jurisdiction. Kait Diaz, the daughter of the village's leader, joins you early on to raid an uninhabited COG settlement for supplies.

The new characters are likable and sport good chemistry as a trio, each with distinctive, but complementary personalities. 'Family' continues to be a strong theme Gears of War 4, with both JD and Kait prepared to risk everything when their parents get into trouble. Much of the game focuses on the rescue of Kait's mother from a new, but eerily familiar enemy, The Swarm.

The genocidal Locust have been destroyed, humanity has begun to rebuild, and the global military urgency of previous games simply isn't there.

As Kait, Del and JD battle through waves of “DeeBee” robots in hopes of stealing an uninhabited, 3D-printed city's Fabricator, the new leader of The Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) appears via video, accusing the Outsiders of attacking COG soldiers. It's not long before you find out the real source of the attacks.

I won't be posting any spoilers for Gears of War 4, suffice to say that it’s one of the most intriguing games in the trilogy so far. The early stages really slam home the idea of this much, much wider universe, while reminding us of the totalitarian nature of the COG, which has often taken a backseat in the story.

The game kicks off with a flashback to the Pendulum Wars which established the COG's global dominance, and then towards the end of Gears of War 3, where Delta Squad were able to destroy the Locust with a massive, targeted radiation weapon. It moves you through the new world, 25 years later, showing how humanity is attempting to rebuild in the wake of the billions slaughtered by the Locust invasion of the previous saga. We're introduced to new creatures, beautiful, bright and colorful alien landscapes, and new characters, like the instantly lovable Oscar.

These early levels lull you into a false sense of security. As you progress through Gears of War 4, it gets gradually darker. Incrementally more industrial, desperate and horrifying. You'll traverse abandoned facilities, underground tunnels, destroyed cities, and the as the Swarm evolves, you begin to feel that fist-clenching life-threatening urgency that really typifies Gears of War.

I can't help but compare Gears of War 4's delivery to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Formulaically, Gears of War 4 does little new. But what it does do is build on the wonderfully cinematic recipe of its predecessors while delivering something that not only re-establishes itself as one of the industry's greatest franchises but it also acts as a signal to let fans know the series is in good hands.

You will be agape with the implications laid bare by this new threat, you will enjoy the way the game hints at a larger, more diverse Gears of War universe, and you will be enraptured by the return of old friends, and the light-hearted camaraderie that typifies Gears games. You will adore the way the game subtly references scenes from previous games. You will be driven mad by the twists and turns in the introduction to this new saga, and by the time the game comes to its shocking conclusion, you will be beside yourself in the knowledge Gears of War 6 is probably a long, long way off.

Gears of War 4's story is perfectly paced, utterly engrossing and above all, it is indeed Gears of War.

Visual & Sound Design

Make no mistake, Gears of War 4 is among the most visually stunning titles not only on Xbox One but of this generation in general.

Gears of War 4's characters are lovingly rendered, inching away at the gap between video game and true photo realism. While Gears of War human designs historically feature blocky, almost comic-book style proportioning, Gears of War 4 edges towards something a little more realistic. Del, JD, and Kait are beautifully crafted, and returning characters like Marcus Fenix retain their signature look, albeit weathered by age.

Gears of War 3 is one of the most visually impressive Xbox 360 games out there, and Gears of War 4 continues that tradition with some utterly incredible particle effects, breath-taking weather sequences, and mind-blowing lighting.

Not only are the basic visual features great, but Gears of War 4's art direction is also on point. New gore physics and designs make weapons feel more impactful than ever, weapons like the iconic Lancer received more thunderous sound effects (to the point of vibrating my earphones with bass boost turned on), and some of the new creatures and environmental hazards are as terrifying as they are awe-inspiring.

The Mad Max-esque windflare storm sequences make up some of the game's most visually impressive moments. They send cascades of debris flying in all directions, painted with real-time lighting from arcing electrical strikes. Everything caught in a windflare is affected by the storm's wind physics, including the bloody chunks of Swarm drone destroyed by the game's arsenal of deadly weapons. All too often have I simply stopped playing to stare at the spectacle unfolding on my screen.

The Xbox One S's HDR features send the title's visuals into overdrive with boosted contrasts, revealing details otherwise hidden. Deeper shadows and brighter lights give Gears of War 4 a vivid, almost life-like realism, that combined with dynamic 1080p resolution scaling helps to elevate it.

There isn't a single dropped frame, even the slightest bit of screen-tearing or vaguest hint of slow-down in Gears of War 4. It's one of the most polished launch titles of recent memory, never crashing. Using dynamic scaling and 30 FPS works well for the game's campaign. The resolution visibly reduces during some of the game's most intense sequences, but you'll be too busy shredding drones with your chainsaw to notice.

Gears of War 4 also uses a technique similar to Quantum Break for its anti-aliasing, making the edges of models appear blurry in motion. I'm not a huge fan of this particular technology, but it's a subjective gripe. It does, however, remind us that the upper limits of what's possible with the Xbox One's hardware have likely been reached, but it's fair to assume Gears of War 4 will be among the first titles to enjoy boosted visuals on next year's monstrous Xbox Scorpio.

From the crimson entrails of a splattered Swarm to the delicate trails of rain sweeping down JD's armor - Gears of War 4 is a visual feast that is as satisfying as it is gruesomely delicious.

Home is where the meat is.

Gameplay

Gears of War's gameplay has a unique style that many tried to emulate in the Xbox 360 era, but it hasn't been seen much on Xbox One. Set in the third-person, Gears of War 4 is a highly cover-based shooter known for its gory combat, signature, heavy feel and cinematic showcases. Gears of War 4 doesn't attempt to redefine, or even evolve that formula, but it does refine it, giving it a glistening finish.

Split into three pillars, Gears of War 4 contains a huge amount of content. The campaign mode lasts a good 10-15 hours depending on the difficulty you choose, but Versus and Horde mode pack potentially dozens, maybe hundreds of hours of potential gameplay. And if Gears of War 4 is anything like Halo 5, it's fair to expect a good amount of post-launch content to keep those multiplayer modes fresh long into the future.

When it comes to basic Gears of War 4 combat, very little has changed. It's still a cover shooter — but the mechanics governing cover systems have been given a much-needed injection of fluidity. I can't remember a time throughout any of the game's modes where I unintuitively snapped into unwanted cover, which is something I recall experiencing with previous titles. The gun play still has that signature, Gears of War heavy feel, but everything handles a fair bit faster. You'll still struggle while dragging a Mulcher across the battlefield, but general movement feels nowhere near as lethargic as it could in previous entries.

While stunned, enemies are vulnerable to an execution attack, which is delightfully satisfying to pull off.

Speaking of the Mulcher, Gears of War 4 comes with an array of brand new weapons and combat features that keep the classic formula from feeling stale. You can now vault over cover by holding the 'B' button as you roadie run into it, stunning an enemy on the other side. While stunned, enemies are vulnerable to an execution attack, which is delightfully satisfying to pull off. Similarly, you can grab an enemy out of cover if they have taken up an opposite position, resulting in the same execution stunned state. Of course, this also means that your enemies can utilize these attacks against you. Thankfully, The Coalition had the forethought to include a counter move, which prevents the new techniques from feeling cheap.

Some of the new weapons include the cover-evading Dropshot, which sends a flying drill across the battlefield. Releasing the trigger causes the drill to burrow directly downwards, generating an explosion. Headshots with this thing are sickeningly satisfying, watching the drill bore into the cranium of your enemies ahead of an ensuing, gore-splattered explosion. The Dropshot sounds overpowered, as it can fly above cover, but it can be tough to use. Combining its skill requirement with a 4-round clip ensures the Dropshot remains balanced.

Another repurposed engineering weapon is the Buzzkill, which almost feels like an homage to Unreal Tournament's Ripsaw. The Buzzkill is a heavy weapon that sends deadly buzz saws spinning and ricocheting across the battlefield, dissecting enemies like a hot knife through crimson butter.

Like previous games, satisfaction typifies Gears of War 4's combat. Every aspect of it is designed to feel impactful, as though you're the star of your own violent action movie. Some of the other new weapons include the Mulcher-like Tri-shot, some ancient UIR weapons like the Markza rifle, and new robotic DeeBee weapons like the submachine gun Enforcer and blisteringly powerful Rocket Salvo.

Speaking of which, the first stages of the campaign will see you face off against an army of COG DeeBee robots. These deadly, but dumb automatons feel little more like canon fodder a lot of the time, but their accompanying heavies, swarming roller ball Trackers and cover-evading Guardians can make the DeeBees overwhelming without aggressive resistance. It's not long until you'll meet Gears of War 4's headline threat, though, the all-new (but familiar) Swarm.

The real nature of the Swarm is unraveled throughout the game's campaign, but in combat, they feature similar archetypes to that of the Locust Horde from previous games. The Wretch-like Juvies bounce off walls and dodge melee attacks at will. Complacency can be deadly. Drones are the more intelligent, cover-using Swarm, and their AI has been given a punishing make-over. They're often more aggressive than the Locust foot soldiers, happy to rush down with shotguns and get into close quarters combat, making use of the game's new cover-vaulting stun abilities.

Beyond standard enemies, the Swarm also have a deadly menagerie of new enemies like the vicious, cover-ignoring Pouncers, and the horrifying player-swallowing Snatchers. Each new enemy requires tactics fresh to the Gears of War franchise, which stops the game from feeling like a rehash with a new coat of 1080p paint.

There are plenty of epic set-pieces and boss fights scattered throughout Gears of War 4's campaign, but I don't want to spoil the fun. Still, these things are standard to Gears of War, but the fourth entry's new windflare mechanics give set-pieces an all-new meaning.

For reasons unknown, enormous electrical storms now rage across Sera's surface, ripping the environment apart with gale force winds and gigantic lightning strikes. As you traverse to the campaign's mission objective, JD Fenix and his crew are often caught up in these deadly meteorological death-traps, but you can use them to your advantage.

Most windflare sequences allow you to use the environment itself to vanquish your enemies. The wind affects the physics of most guns, warping the trajectory of projectiles. You can dislodge debris by shooting at them, sending massive battering rams sweeping across the battlefield to crush your enemies. The results of a well-placed shot in these scenarios are always incredibly rewarding, adding a new dimension to the Gears formula.

The fun continues in Gears of War 4's online modes, including the 60 FPS versus modes and the addictive 5-man Horde mode. I haven't been able to try too much Versus mode as of yet, due to the small amount of players with the game so far, but I'm hoping the game's new skill-based matchmaking system will pair me with players at my experience level. Previous Gears of War titles have been notoriously difficult to access for newer players, so these modern systems will hopefully go to some length to alleviate that issue.

I have, however, played a lot of Horde mode, which I'm happy to describe as the quintessential co-operative shooter experience on Xbox One. Horde 3.0 is class-based, giving players bonuses for committing to certain roles in battle. Snipers deal increased headshot damage and gain perks for spotting and so on, engineers take charge building and repairing fortifications, and heavies gain bonuses with explosives, heavy weapons and manual turrets.

Activities across Horde and Versus mode reward credits which can be spent on loot called Gear Packs, which contain tons of cosmetic items and skill cards for use in Horde mode. Duplicate cards can be destroyed and then put towards specific cards you're seeking, to reduce the randomness of the system. Upgrading your skill cards and leveling up your classes will be crucial if you eventually want to go through 50 ranks of Horde mode on insane difficulty, which, as the name implies, is a challenge best left to the thoroughly demented.

When you consider the 10-15 hour length of the campaign, the longevity of the online modes, the fact that Gears of War 4 also comes with Gears of War 1, 2, 3 and Judgement on backward compatibility, it's impossible to fault this game on value. It offers such a dizzying amount of raw, uncontaminated fun, making it such a pleasure to write about and recommend.

Conclusion

Gears of War 4 just feels great. It feels like the return of an old friend, and The Coalition masterfully weave that nostalgia into the game without smothering us in it exploitatively — which is something they very easily could have done. Gears of War 4's greatest moments can be found in between the lines. They're in the shadows of familiar silhouettes, in the tones of nostalgic sound effects, in every COG tag you find scattered around the battlefield, and every ridiculous, over-the-top set piece.

Pros:

Technical showcase for Xbox visuals

Polished to glistening

Satisfyingly gruesome combat

Engrossing story

Heaps of value

Cons:

Could have explored more new mechanics and features

Gears of War 4 is the greatest exclusive Xbox One has so far, and that's really saying something when you consider the likes of Forza Horizon 3, Halo 5 and Ori and the Blind Forest. The Coalition has solidified their guardianship of one of the greatest video game franchises of all time, and not only proven to the world that the IP is in good hands, but that Microsoft Studios isn't reliant on Halo to make its mark in the shooter space.

Whether you're a returning fan or a Gears of War newbie, do yourself a favor and pick up this stunning game as soon as you can.

Gears of War 4 launches on October 11th, 2016 for Xbox One and Windows 10 as a Play Anywhere title.

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition Title Update (February 2016)

This title update is mandatory as is set to be 5gb big. Here are the notes released from Gearsofwar.com

Title Update Details

The latest Title Update for Gears of War: Ultimate Edition brings the following improvements and fixes:
◾Kills in Social playlists now also count towards the ‘Seriously’ achievement

When we introduced our new Competitive Playlists to make our offering more focused, ‘Seriously’ only counting kills in Competitive didn’t make as much sense. As such, we’ve now updated the achievement to count both Social and Competitive playlist kills so you can work towards the achievement in any mode you want!
◾Improvements to Boomshot hit registration

At times, the Boomshot has had inconsistent performance. We’ve addressed a few of these items that should help the Boomshot perform more consistently – including a fix that should resolve the issue where the Boomshot fails to damage an enemy when fired at their feet. Thanks you to all our fans who provided detailed feedback and videos that helped us improve the way the Boomshot performs.
◾Addressed some matchmaking issues that caused long wait times
◾Improvements to hit registration on downed enemies (sponging)
◾Small improvements to the Left Trigger Issue
◾Fixed hit detection when shooting an enemy in cover against the top pillars on Clocktower
◾Removed POI on Right Stick for Alternate Control Scheme
◾Bug fixes and general improvements

These issues were chosen based on a mix of community feedback and design decisions to improve the quality of life for our fans playing Ultimate Edition!

Playlist Update Details

Along with the improvements for Title Update 2, we've also been working on a new format for our playlists based on the recent Blitz feedback among other items. The changes going live alongside the Title Update are below:
◾Increased Execution XP to better match the gain in other modes

Execution is a mode that can be highly rewarding, but also extremely punishing. To better reward players who take on the challenge of Execution, we've increased the XP gain in the mode significantly.
◾Moved Blitz from Competitive to Social
◾Added a new Competitive TDM playlist

We’ve been excited to see such a positive reaction to the new, faster Blitz mode. We wanted to address community feedback about quitters impacting games - as such, we’ve moved Blitz to Social so join in progress backfilling can replace any teammates who quit. To ensure fans of Respawn Gametypes have an option to play a competitive matchmaking experience, we’ve added an additional TDM playlist to the game in the Competitive category.
◾Returned Warzone as a permanent playlist
◾Returned Assassination as a playlist for a limited time

Warzone is also returning as a permanent social playlist based on fan feedback. While Assassination has returned as a playlist, this is for a limited time only – we will be returning the event to ‘special event’ status in the future.

Special Event: Seriously TDM

To celebrate the update to the Seriously achievement, which now counts kills in any mode across Social and Competitive Playlists, we're running a special one-week only event called 'Seriously TDM'.

Grab some friends and get slaying with 30 respawn TDM in a first to two round scenario, helping you rack up the kills on your march towards Seriously in Ultimate Edition. This mode can be found in the 'Social' category until 12pm PST on February 29th.

FAQs

How big is the update?
The update is around 5GB and is mandatory to install in order to play while connected to LIVE. We recommend you leave your Xbox in the Always On power mode so the update can download in the background once it's deployed.

Will Seriously count my kills in Social from before the update?
The achievement will not retroactively add your kills from social games before the update to your achievement progress. From the update onwards, you'll be able to add to your kill count in any Social or Competitive playlist.

How does moving Blitz to Social combat quitters?
With the move to 2 rounds to win, following in the footsteps of King of the Hill, Blitz suffered in Competitive because a quitting team member would have a big impact on the team. We're moving Blitz to Social in order to allow 'joining in progress', where players can be matchmade into empty slots on an active team, which Competitive does not allow. This works effectively for King of the Hill, and we expect the same success for Blitz.

What happens to the TDM Leaderboards?
TDM leaderboards will now only register in Competitive TDM matches. All your leaderboard stats will transfer to this leaderboard, even if they were earned in Social matches before the update.

Why is Assassination only returning as a playlist temporarily?
Assassination is notably behind the other modes in terms of player population, which results in a less than ideal matchmaking experience. While we have returned it for now to offer a bigger window for players to earn the 'Mix It Up' achievement, the mode will be moving back to being a 'Special Event' playlist only at some point in the future.

Will Warzone disappear during Special Event periods?
It will not! At this time, Warzone is sticking around permanently, even when a Special Event is running.

What is POI?
POI (Point of Interest) is the 'Y Button to Look' prompt for default control users. Users using alternate controls for Multiplayer reported accidental stick clenching causing them deaths in multiplayer, so the function was removed on alternate controls.

[Multiplayer]   [Online

This achievement must be done in online multiplayer; you can't do this in local online versus play. You can 'spot' players by clicking while aiming at them. This allows your fellow teammates to see their whereabouts, because an icon will show above their head, for a short time. This feature was not implemented in the original Gears of War.

Spot enemy players and hope that spot results in kill by a teammate. It is recommended you use spots at choke points where multiple players congregate and shotguns are being used then spot as many enemy players as you can. You can only spot one enemy player at any given time.

Commando 75G Complete all acts on Insane Difficulty
[Offline or Online]   [Solo or Co-op]   [Story-related]

You can actually start on Insane mode instead of having to unlock it. Complete all acts on Insane difficulty and the subsequent difficulty achievements will unlock as well; they all stack.

If for some reason you've missed an act, you can check which one in the 'Mission Select' section. There it will show the list of acts per chapter, you may notice an icon next to each act you've completed. The image below is basically what the Insane icon looks like.

Time to Remember 10G Recover 11 COG tags (on any difficulty)
[Offline or Online]   [Solo or Co-op]
Please reference "For the Fallen" achievement description below.

Honor-Bound 20G Recover 22 COG tags (on any difficulty)
[Offline or Online]   [Solo or Co-op]
Please reference "For the Fallen" achievement description below.

For the Fallen 30G Recover all 33 COG tags (on any difficulty)
[Offline or Online]   [Solo or Co-op]

There were only 30 in the original Gears on the 360; but 3 have been added with the addition of the bonus campaign levels from the PC version of the game. There is generally one per act. Don't despair if you miss one in the process; you can go back via chapter select and collect it at any time. If you've missed one, you can track it in the War Journal, then Cog Tags menu. Once you open that, it will bring you to the comics. If you have pages missing from the comics, it should indicate what tag you've missed. Once you pick it up, it is automatically saved, so if you die or reload your checkpoint, your collection will still count.

Zen and the Art of Reloading 10G Perform 25 perfect active reloads (on any difficulty)
[Offline or Online]   [Solo or Co-op]

You can reload your weapon with . As you do this, you'll see a line move across the reload icon in the upper right corner of the screen. There's an opaque white line in front, followed by a tapering, translucent line, usually about midway through the icon. The opaque line represents the perfect reload. You must then hit again in this section to activate it. This gives you bonus damage to the amount of bullets you've reloaded for a short time. You should easily have this done within the first couple acts.

Zen and the Art Part 2 20G Perform 5 perfect active reloads in a row (on any difficulty)
[Offline or Online]   [Solo or Co-op]

Do the same as above, just do it 5 times in a row. Some weapons are easier to do, like the Lancer or Hammerburst. Pistols are very quick to reload and could prove difficult to newer players. You can do this right at the beginning of the game if you wish; just fire a few bullets and reload with . You'll get the hang of it eventually.

Clusterluck 30G Kill 3 enemies at once 10 different times (on any difficulty)
[Offline or Online]   [Solo or Co-op]

You probably won't achieve this during casual play, so you'll have to do a little grinding for it, but it's not that difficult to do. Grenades, Boomshot, and the Hammer of Dawn will make this easier if you get clusters of enemies.

You can do this as early as Chapter 1, Act 1, which is the tutorial level. When the Grubs are plasma cutting through the door, wait until the door drops and three Grubs will enter the room. Toss a grenade at their feet and hopefully blow them all up at once; then rinse and repeat.

Dom-curious 10G Complete 1 co-op chapter in co-op (on any difficulty)
[Co-op]   [Offline or Online]
Please reference "I can't quit you Dom" achievement description below.

Domination 20G Complete 10 different chapters in co-op (on any difficulty)
[Co-op]   [Offline or Online]
Please reference "I can't quit you Dom" achievement description below.

I Can't Quit You Dom 30G Complete all acts in co-op (on any difficulty)
[Co-op]   [Offline or Online]

You must complete all 36 acts either in local or online co-op. This can be done two different ways. First, you can play local split-screen co-op with two controllers. Second, you can utilize the online campaign feature and play with random people

Don't You Die On Me 20G Revive 100 teammates in Versus multiplayer (social or competitive) [Multiplayer]   [Online]

Self explanatory- when a teammate gets downed during battle, walk over to them and press (x). Do this 100 times. Does not have to be done in one game.

Always Remember Your First 20G Finish playing a Versus match (social or competitive)
[Multiplayer]   [Online]

Unlocks after completing your first online match.

Don't Hate the Player 10G Finish with the highest point in a Versus match (social or competitive) [Multiplayer]   [Online]

This could prove to be difficult for some. You gain points for kills, executions, revives, assists, spots that result in kills and capture points. You must have the highest total out of both teams, not just your team. You can even get the highest point total and be on the losing team. Just do your best and you'll get it eventually.

Mix It Up 20G Win a match in every Versus game type (social or competitive)
[Multiplayer]   [Online]

Play and win a match of the following five game types:

    Execution
    Warzone
    Team Deathmatch
    King of the Hill (KotH)
    Assassination

Around the World 30G Win a match in every Versus map (social or competitive)
[Multiplayer]   [Online]

You must win one match of any game type on the following 20 maps. This can't be done in private matches!

    Boxes
    Bullet Marsh
    Canals
    Clocktower
    Courtyard
    Escalation
    Fuel Depot
    Garden
    Gold Rush
    Gridlock
    Mansion
    Mausoleum
    Old Bones
    Process

    Rooftops
    Sanctuary
    Subway
    Tryo Station
    War Machine

Can't Touch Me 20G Win 10 Versus matches without losing a round (social or competitive)
[Multiplayer]   [Online]

It is recommended that you play the KotH (King of the Hill) or Blitz game types as there is only one round to complete. So in reality, you can't lose a round even if you wanted to. Obviously you can do this in any game type if your team is good enough. This can't be done in private matches!

Seriously...50G Kill 10,000 people in Versus competitive matches
[Multiplayer]   [Online]

Seriously kill lots and lots of people... seriously. This can only be done in Competitive matches! Playing KotH is a surefire way to rack up lots of kills as there is no kill limit, just a score. The boosting method would consist of two players with two controllers playing the 2v2 Gnasher execution matches; choose a region that is not your own and search at the same time and hopefully you find each other.

THIS! IS! ANNEX! 40G Complete 100 matches 3+ rounds in Annex on Xbox Live and capture 3 objectives in each match
 [Multiplayer]   [Online]

You just have to complete 100 matches (not win); but you must capture at least three 'rings' during the match. Since this Annex achievement can now be done via Koth and Blitz gametypes (which are only one round) you have to be on point with ring captures. Annex is very similar to the King of the Hill gametype. In Annex the rings always spawn at a weapon spawn point.

Easy way: Using a second controller logged in as guest, you can create an Xbox Live, private Blitz match. Have the settings at one round, 180 second win timer. It's you verse your bot. So just cap the points and win with ease. This can be done anywhere, but use a smaller map to make things go quicker. Using this method, a one round match should take no longer than four minutes each.

If you don't have a second controller: You can play online in an Xbox Live private match with a second person and exchange wins. Or if the second person has a second controller, you can both be on the winning team against an idle bot.

This can now be done in social or competitive matches, as the achievement description does not specify. So jump into your favorite ring-based game type and blast away. Remember, you must cap at least three rings during the match or it will not count!

Nub Pwn3r 30G Win 20 rounds in Annex on Xbox Live by shutting out the opposing team
[Multiplayer]   [Online]

You must shut out the opposing team during any given round. With this being added to public matches; the Koth and Blitz game types are only one round. So you must blank the opposing team for the entire match. In Annex the rings always spawn at a weapon spawn point.
If you don't have a second controller: You can play online in an Xbox Live private match with a second person and exchange wins. Or if the second person has a second controller, you can both be on the winning team against an idle bot.

This can be done in social or competitive matches, as the achievement description does not specify. So jump into your favorite ring-based game type and blast away. Remember, you can't allow the opposing team to score a single point or it will not count!

CQC 20G Win 25 matches in Boxes (social or competitive)
[Multiplayer]   [Online]

CQC = Close Quarters Combat. Boxes is basically the War Machine map with a re-skin and the sides cut off. It is a small map which is only used for the 2v2 Gnasher Execution gametype. Though my understanding is that 2v2 Gnasher Execution is only available in the competitive playlist. I've yet to come across it in the social playlist.

Level 5 5G Reach level 5
[Multiplayer]   [Online]
Please reference "Re-up" achievement description below.

Level 10 10G Reach level 10
[Multiplayer]   [Online]
Please reference "Re-up" achievement description below.

Level 25 25G Reached level 25
[Multiplayer]   [Online]
Please reference "Re-up" achievement description below.

Re-up 20G Reach level 100 and re-up
[Multiplayer]   [Online]

You can only gain experience in versus online game modes. You can gain experience in Xbox Live private matches; but it's minimal at best and not a sustainable source of XP. You will gain experience for everything you do; but it mostly boils down to kills, wins and the consecutive match bonus. Without a doubt, this will take some time to accomplish.

Once you reach level 100, which requires you earn 3,851,750 experience, you'll have to visit the Statistics page to 're-up'. Once there, press to re-up; the game will ask if you're sure, then press to confirm. You'll revert back to level 1 and net yourself the achievement. If you're a Gears 3 veteran, you know all about re-upping; for those that don't.. think of it as a prestige.

Handyman 25G Killed an enemy with every weapon in Versus (social or competitive)
[Multiplayer]   [Online]

Just get one kill with each weapon in the game. There are 10 weapons total, and if you're bad at certain weapons, you'll eventually get a kill with one by blind dumb luck. Besides your starting weapons, the rest of the weapons are spawned on the map that you must get. Sometimes other players are doing the same, so get there first, or try to take turns.

Make sure that you actually get the kill.. a person downing an enemy and you shooting them will only count as an assist. You can down an enemy with one weapon and kill them with another if you wish.

Press (Tac/Com) while in a multiplayer match and it will show the weapon spawns on the map.

Starting Weapons:

Lancer
Gnasher Shotgun
Snub Pistol

Map Weapons:

Hammerburst
Boltok Pistol
Longshot Rifle
Boomshot
Torque Bow
Hammer of Dawn
Frag Grenade

G-reader 10G Read one full comic
[Offline or Online]   [Solo or Co-op]

To unlock a full comic, you must collect Cog Tags to unlock the pages. There are five total comics that you can read, but you only need to read one of them. Once you have unlocked a full comic you can view it in the 'Extras' menu and select the comic you wish to read. You can then scroll through the comic using the to the end and the achievement should unlock. If it does not, utilize the zoom function with and slowly 'read' each page.

This can be a little glitchy for some reason. I had to 'read' a comic a few times slowly to get it to unlock. Some have reported that coming back the next day and reading the same comic has resulted in the achievement.

Brothers To The End 10G Defeat General RAAM in co-op on Insane without either player being DBNO [Co-op]   [Difficulty]   [Offline or Online]

This will probably prove to be the most difficult campaign achievement. You can do this in local or online co-op. You must defeat RAAM without either playing being downed on the Insane difficulty. As the most common strategy goes, one player uses the Torque Bow while the other snipes with perfect active reload head shots. The exploding arrows disperse the Kryll around RAAM leaving him vulnerable to fire; lay into him with head shots.

Optional: your teammate can switch to a primary weapon, like a Lancer, and put some extra damage on him in between Torque Bow shots. As he moves closer, use grenades and pump him full of lead! Should you fail, just reload the last checkpoint and try again.

Gimme Some Skin 10G Play one Versus Match with a Custom Weapon Skin
[Multiplayer]   [Online]

This can be done locally with two controllers or simply by playing online in any versus match. Once the gametype and map are set, the game will go to a loading screen and then you'll reach the Loadout Screen. Here you can choose your character and weapon skins. Scroll down to the weapon you wish to change and hit or . If you currently don't have any skins, you will earn the Gold skins after September 4th just for playing the game from launch to the end of August. You also have the option to buy skins in the Xbox Store; but you're not obligated to do so.

If you do not have any skins at all; you didn't play beta, didn't play it during launch week or didn't get a special edition game... you can still earn a skin when backwards compatibility comes to the Xbox One. All four Gears games will be backwards compatible at that time. Just earning one achievement on either Gears 1, 2 or 3 will earn you the Crimson Omen skin in the Ultimate Edition. Just play it on the same gamertag.

Better Late Than Never 20G Win 25 matches in Team Deathmatch
[Multiplayer]   [Online]

Play and win 25 matches of Team Deathmatch. Team Deathmatch pits 4v4 with a finite amount of lives. In social or competitive matches the number of lives is 10. Once a team exhausts their 10 'extra lives' they will be down to their last spawns. So the team to bring that number to zero, and kills the remaining players on the map, wins. This will come eventually if you put in enough time and effort. You can complete this in Social or Competitive matches; or a mixture of both.

Even though the achievement description does not say specifically "social or competitive", this can NOT be done in private matches; it's been tested.

Whack-A-Grub 10G Closed all 4 E-holes around the fountain in Fish in a Barrel without any Locust fully emerging
[Offline or Online]   [Solo or Co-op]

This must be done in Chapter 1, Act 3. After you find some of Alpha Squad, you'll move down the street while fighting through some Locust. You'll then come to a low, circular structure with a tall monument in the middle. Once you are in the area, you'll be ambushed by Locust emergence holes; there are four total that you must close before any Locust can crawl out. The first three e-holes are in random order, the fourth is always in the same spot. To make life easier, you can do this on Casual difficulty; you can even do it while playing co-op.
